Replacing a damaged fence panel may appear simple, but checking the measurements and surrounding components first can prevent wasted time and an unsuitable purchase.

Measure the opening, not only the old panel

Measure the clear distance between the posts and check the required panel height. An old timber panel may have swollen, warped or broken, so its current dimensions may not represent the original size accurately.

Identify the panel style

Common choices include heavy-duty lap, featherboard, closeboard, decorative and contemporary slatted panels. Matching the existing style usually gives the neatest result, but a stronger alternative may be worth considering if several panels need renewal.

Inspect the posts and gravel boards

A new panel will not solve movement caused by a failed post. Check timber posts for rot near ground level and concrete posts for serious cracks or damaged slots. Gravel boards should sit securely and provide a level base for the panel.

Consider weight and handling

Fence panels can be awkward and heavy, especially in narrow access routes or windy conditions. Plan how the panel will reach the garden and use suitable help and protective equipment. If the supporting components are damaged, professional fitting may be safer.
